i don’t want to jump the gun, but i think hwang daseul might have just done it again. two episodes in to let free the curse of taekwondo and i am obsessed. more than obsessed. transfixed. this show feels special in a way hwang daseul’s touch only can give, and just using these two episodes to compare to her previous works, i love that i can already spot the continuity in the kinds of stories she tells, the messages she portrays and how she portrays them. she just knows how to let her characters exist in harmful and difficult places and show how their experiences affect them while also just showing them as normal human beings. it is so so easy to overdramatise these kinds of stories that have these difficult topics and have it be so surface level, but she has never done that. instead, she shows how those experiences shape a person and how they go about living in spite of them. all the way from where your eyes linger to now, she gives us characters that are wholly themselves and not just the traumas they have gone through and i just adore that. i can’t remember what i was talking about specifically, but i remember talking about this sentiment and how it actually helps to build empathy in an audience as opposed to just showing a difficult topic at the most surface level bc you think that makes it accessible and easier to understand and hence empathise with. i don’t think that ever works. it’s only when you do what hwang daseul does, when you give us characters we can get to know and fall in love with and care for that you help us to empathise with their experiences. it’s hard to understand the weight and the hardship of experiencing something traumatic, but when something bad happens to someone close to you, a family member or a friend, you understand and feel that pain astronomically more. that’s what hwang daseul manages to do. and more so, she makes you feel that while also seeing these people as people. you get to see them away from the hurt, you see them smile in moments of happiness and you see that too with people you’re close to, and you feel even more how special and important those moments of happiness are.

and that’s why, whenever hwang daseul is at the helm of something, i will be seated from start to end with endless boxes of tissues ready. i can’t wait to see what else this show has in store.

Also, okay, despite the fact I disagree on the “physical strength and combat” and “emotionlessness” bit that whoever wrote the Tech entry in that new Clone reference book put down (I think the people who write the reference books tend to not always watch everything closely, and that people use “emotions” to refer to emoting, not internalized feelings, which is kind of annoying but in any case) I am looking at the wording of, “would give anything for those he cared about—even his life.” Because. That still doesn’t say Tech is dead. Still. Tech would die for the people he loves. That’s inarguable. That’s been inarguable since “Ruins of War.” Whether or not he died, though—that’s the part that still isn’t clear.

I’m sure this looks like dark shadow deciding to possess Tokoyami’s corpse but I can’t imagine they would choose to continue living without him. Instead the true story is much worse.

Introducing the “Came Back Wrong” AU. Tokoyami and dark shadow were always in mutual agreement that dying wasn’t that bad because they would get to be together still and go to Valhalla or whatever. But when dark shadow is watching tokoyami actively bleed out in front of them, they suddenly change their mind. They make an impulsive decision and decide to sacrifice themself by infuse all of their dark energy with Tokoyami’s cells (this is a form of quirk evolution). It’s bad enough that dark shadow didnt survive, but unfortunately, tokoyami doesn’t seem to make it through the process entirely either.

This new creature inhabiting their body has both of their memories and a mixture of their personalities, but it’s also something entirely new. They don’t breathe and their heart doesn’t beat, they are only sustained by dark energy now. Their body can shift between a shadow and human form. They end up going by Tsukuyomi because that is familiar to both of their halves. They often come off as creepy with their unusual and shifting mannerisms.

Tsuku is probably the most perturbed by their new existence. They are grieving themself, and constantly lonely. But also happy to be so close to their other half; it’s confusing especially when their memories and feelings differ on certain subjects.

Worst of all is their friends having to mourn them too while watching this person ferrying around the living corpse of their friends. I think they would get along well with kurogiri.

If Kipperlilly DOES end up betraying Porter/Jace as part of a secret other scheme she has (whether good or evil) and it has to do with saving Lucy, I just know she’s going to be a bitch about it and pull a ‘sorry, I only save High Five Heroes’ before leaving her other friends to die or some shit. And then she will take her final form: Magic Betty from Adventure Time, betraying her allies and saving her frost gf at the expense of the world. It would also parallel what Ankarna is going through (‘your girlfriend’s out of town, it sucks’, becoming a little imperialist rage machine under the influence of Porter/Sunstone but not being able to fully turn on Lucy despite going against her values and turning into a violent weirdo).
